Design Technology
INTENT
At Tushingham, DT provides children with an opportunity to design and make a product that has a real life purpose . We want to give children the skills to take inspiration and knowledge from the world around them and then think creatively so as to design and make their own innovative functional products. Through the DT curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real life purpose.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Tushingham the teaching of DT follows a investigation, design, make and evaluation cycle. Wherever possible the investigation stage will use real products to demonstrate to pupils . The design process is linked to a real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to learning with the children being given choice in order to create their own unique products. Focussed practical tasks will give the children the skills they need I order to then make a functioning product that meets their design criteria. Finally children evaluate their own products against their design criteria and consider their success. Each of these steps are rooted in technical knowledge and vocabulary appropriate to the unit being taught.
IMPACT
Our D T curriculum, interwoven with our Christian ethos gives our pupils knowledge and understanding that they can develop and make products that impact the world. By providing our children with skills in investigating, planning, designing, evaluating, problem solving and reflecting they are able to use their gifts and talents to flourish and make a positive impact on the world, both now and in the future.
