Welcome to Robins Class

In Robins Class, we have a wonderful mix of Nursery and Reception children who happily play, learn and grow together. At the beginning of the year, our priority is to build positive, secure and trusting relationships, creating a strong foundation from which every child can flourish. Throughout the year, we broaden children’s experiences, providing opportunities for them to try new things, develop their confidence and persevere when faced with new challenges. We place a strong emphasis on developing children’s ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings, express themselves verbally and regulate their emotions, helping them to feel confident, respected and valued as individuals.

Our classroom provides a welcoming, stimulating and purposeful play-based learning environment. Each area of learning has been carefully planned to provide high-quality learning opportunities, with resources thoughtfully selected to support children’s development and encourage curiosity, creativity and independence. Every resource has a purpose and has truly ‘earned’ its place on the shelf! Enhancements are introduced throughout the year to provide additional support, challenge and opportunities to apply and extend learning.

To support high-quality learning through play, our teachers and teaching assistants value, model and participate in children’s play. They introduce children to the endless possibilities of our open-ended resources and carefully consider how and when to interact with children to support, challenge and extend their learning. Through these interactions, children develop the skills and confidence to become increasingly engaged and independent learners during future continuous provision sessions.

Communication and language are at the heart of everything we do. Adults engage children in frequent, meaningful back-and-forth conversations, modelling rich vocabulary, extending children’s ideas and encouraging them to listen, respond and express themselves. These interactions provide valuable opportunities for children to develop their confidence, vocabulary and communication skills within everyday experiences.

New concepts and skills are introduced through carefully planned adult-led inputs. These provide a wide range of opportunities for children to learn new skills, develop their knowledge, challenge their thinking and secure their understanding. Adult-led learning is carefully planned to ensure that knowledge and skills are progressive and sequential across all seven areas of the EYFS curriculum: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

Learning at Home

We believe that learning is most successful when school and home work together. To help consolidate and extend the learning that has taken place at school, children will receive a home learning challenge every two weeks. These challenges are designed to be fun, practical and engaging activities that children can enjoy completing with their families. We encourage families to support their child with these experiences and complete as many of the activities as possible.

As children develop their phonics knowledge and become increasingly confident at decoding words, they will bring home a decodable reading book containing the sounds they have been learning that week. Please encourage your child to read this book regularly throughout the week. Initially, the focus should be on accurately decoding the words. As their confidence develops, encourage them to read with increasing fluency. Repeated reading also allows children to develop their understanding and comprehension of the text, and eventually to add expression and intonation to bring the story to life.

Alongside their decodable reading book, children will also choose a ‘Reading for Pleasure’ book to take home and enjoy sharing with an adult. This book is not intended to be decoded independently; instead, it provides an opportunity to develop a love of books, enjoy stories together and talk about characters, events, vocabulary and illustrations.

Working Together

At our school, we recognise the importance of developing strong, positive relationships with our families. Working closely with parents and carers enables us to develop a wider understanding of each child, including their individual interests, strengths, experiences and areas for development.

Throughout the year, we look forward to sharing the children’s fantastic learning and celebrating their achievements with you through parent meetings, work showcases and other opportunities to come together as a school community.

Together, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment where every child feels happy, confident and excited to learn.
