Curriculum progression documents

The documents below detail the end of year expectations of learning for each year group, in each subject.

Reading

Children begin to learn to enjoy books and reading as soon as they start school. They learn to read through learning phonics in a systematic way. A DfE approved scheme called 'Unlocking Letters and Sounds' is used to deliver daily phonics teaching. This is reinforced through other subjects throughout the day, in a variety of ways, helping the knowledge to be retained. This scheme progresses into a scheme called 'Pathways to Read' which ensures children continue to build skills in their journey through our school. In all years, strategies are used to encourage children to love reading and children leave our school with a lifelong love of books.

Writing

We follow a Mastery approach to English through the programme ‘Pathways to Write.’ Units of work are delivered using high quality texts and children in all year groups are given varied opportunities for writing. Skills are built up through repetition within the units, and children apply these skills in the writing activities provided.  Many opportunities for widening children’s vocabulary are given through the Pathways to Write approach and this builds on the extensive work we do in school to provide our children with a rich and varied vocabulary.

The end of year expectations for writing, reading and spoken language for each of our year groups in the attached documents.

Maths

The White Rose programme provides a basis for maths lessons which teachers bring to life using their creativity. Our teachers build the children’s confidence and resilience, ensuring that they are fluent and have conceptual understanding of key mathematical concepts.  Children know that it is a good thing to be challenged.  Children are able to reason and problem solve in a range of mathematical contexts within maths lessons and in other areas of the curriculum.  The fun and exciting approach to learning ensures children have a positive view of mathematics and understand the power and purpose of mathematics in everyday life.
